SHAGUN 2024

The Shagun Initiative is a groundbreaking effort dedicated to rescuing underprivileged women from exploitation and empowering them with dignity, security, and hope. In India, marriage is more than a personal milestone—it is a societal cornerstone that profoundly impacts a woman’s future. Sadly, for women in marginalized communities, it often becomes a source of vulnerability, with poverty and societal pressures driving them toward child marriage, forced labor, or even organized crimes like forced prostitution and trafficking.

Breaking the Cycle of Child Marriage and Exploitation

Child marriage is a persistent issue in India, especially among economically disadvantaged sections. Many families, burdened by poverty, perceive early marriage as a solution, unaware of the long-term harm it inflicts on their daughters. The Shagun Initiative addresses this by ensuring parents that their daughters’ education can continue, with a promise to cover the financial expenses of their marriage once they reach legal age.

By organizing mass weddings and providing vocational training, we delay child marriages and empower women to lead independent lives, breaking the chains of generational poverty and exploitation.

Empowering Women Through Mass Weddings

The mass weddings facilitated by the Shagun Initiative are more than ceremonial events; they are catalysts for social transformation. By taking on all wedding-related expenses—from attire to ceremonial arrangements—we remove the financial burden on families. These weddings also serve as platforms to :

  • Educate parents about the importance of delaying marriage until their daughters are emotionally and legally ready.

  • Encourage women to pursue education and vocational training, equipping them with the tools to lead independent and dignified lives.

Through this initiative, marriage becomes a pathway to empowerment, not exploitation.

Holistic Empowerment: Beyond the Wedding Ceremony

The Shagun Initiative extends beyond the ceremonial aspects of marriage, focusing on the holistic empowerment of women. This includes :

  • Vocational Training : Offering skill development programs to create economic opportunities and foster self-reliance.

  • Social Security : Conducting rigorous criminal background checks on grooms to ensure the safety and well-being of brides.

These measures ensure that women are not just married but are also equipped to lead independent, empowered lives.

The Impact So Far

Our efforts have positively impacted the lives of over 2,067 women, preventing child marriages and protecting them from organized crime like trafficking. By facilitating their education, skill development, and self-reliance, we have created a ripple effect of empowerment that benefits their families and communities. Additionally, By combining education, empowerment, and community support, we are not only preventing child marriages but also building a society where women from marginalized communities can thrive with dignity and independence.
