MENSTRUSHALA
SUMMARY
Menstrualshala is a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to addressing the critical issues of menstrual health and hygiene among underprivileged women and girls in India. By providing sustainable solutions, raising awareness, and breaking the stigma around menstruation, we aim to empower women and promote their overall well-being. Our efforts have positively impacted over one million women across 14 states, bringing us closer to achieving menstrual equity.
CAUSE
Menstrual health is a critical issue in India, where inadequate hygiene facilities and awareness cause over 23 million female students to drop out annually, affecting 120 million menstruating adolescents. Poor menstrual practices lead to severe health risks, including infections and cervical cancer, which causes 60,000 deaths yearly, two-thirds linked to inadequate hygiene. Many women rely on unsafe alternatives like rags due to poverty and societal stigma, while cultural taboos and patriarchal norms exacerbate the crisis. This global concern demands urgent attention, especially in underserved communities lacking resources and education.
OUR ACTION
At Menstrualshala, we focus on sustainable solutions that empower women and eliminate barriers to menstrual hygiene. Our key actions include :
Raising Awareness : Conducting counselling, video sessions, creative activities, and Q&A sessions to educate women and girls on sustainable menstrual hygiene practices.
Distribution of Hygiene Kits : Over 280,500 personal hygiene kits have been distributed, ensuring access to essential menstrual products.
Sanitary Pad Vending Machines and Incinerators : Installing over 70 vending machines and incinerators in girls’ schools and community washrooms, making menstrual products accessible and disposal safe.
Preventive Health Education : Organizing sensitization camps addressing menstrual stigma, taboos, and the prevention of life-threatening diseases, including sexually transmitted infections.
Nutrition and Health Advocacy : Educating women on the importance of a nutritious diet, combating anaemia, and promoting healthy living to ensure smoother menstrual cycles.
Sustainability and Environment : Encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly menstrual practices and sustainable solutions.
